Stonechats + 1

Sunny at first then clouding over, 17°, light SSW.

Watching 3-4 Stonechat on Lollingdon hill this morning when they were joined by a 5th bird.

Initially I thought, another Stonechat but the chats were quite aggressive towards the newcomer which almost immediately flew off and landed on a gate around 30m from me.

As I got my bins on it, it decided to fly over me and flew down the track to a hedgerow. I managed to see enough of it to realise it was a Redstart. So I moved on down the track to look for it.

The bird was very flighty and kept moving down the hedge to where the hedge ended. I was noting the red tail and a dark plumage, too dark for a Common Redstart.

I stayed back about 50m from the area and the bird dropped out the hedge a couple of times onto the track. that’s when I got a couple of good views of it and confirmed it as a f/immature Black Redstart. Unfortunately too flighty for a photo.

I immediately phoned Alan who arrived around 15 minutes later but in that time the bird had disappeared and despite both of us searching the area from the hill to the north and the farm to the south, we were unable to relocate the bird.

This is quite a rare bird in the Cholsey area with the last record on 14th Nov 2014, coincidentally on Lollingdon Hill.

Alan went up the hill later in the day but still no sign, although the 4 Stonechat were still present.

Not a lot else around though I did see 2 Redwing on the north side of the hill. A few Chiffchaff, 8 Yellowhammer plus Meadow Pipit, Skylark and Pied Wagtail around in fair numbers.

Mammals: Brown Hare.

Butterflies: singles of Small White & Red Admiral.

Another Black Redstart

Cloudy with light rain, 9°, fresh SSW.

A delay in publishing this from Friday due to technical difficulties on line. My new ISP did not get a router to me.....................

Still somewhat quiet on the hill today, up to 100 Fieldfare around, 40+ Redwing, 80+ Starling, 2 Goldcrest and a single flyover Siskin.

A Kingfisher still around the pond area.

I had an email from a lady who walks the area around Lollingdon who saw a Black Redstart around the farm on Sunday 22nd Nov, a good description given (per Val Viner).

114th Species for the year.

Black Redstart & The Marsh

Cloudy, 9°, light NW.

A visit to Wallingford where the Black Redstart was still present around St Mary’s church in the centre of town.

It spent most of the time in the large tree in the graveyard and rarely ventured down whilst I was there, seemed to be feeding well and caught a large caterpillar which it fed upon on the roof top of pizza hut opposite in St Mary's street.

A visit to Cholsey Marsh later saw approx. 80 Corn Bunting come to roost, also 30 Starling and 18 Meadow Pipit in at the roost.

2 Kingfisher along the river bank and a Great-crested Grebe on the river. A single Cormorant flew upstream and a Green Sandpiper flew on to the marsh.

60+ Fieldfare and a handful of Redwing present on the opposite bank, 5 Bullfinch in the Blackthorn and a Chiffchaff present.

5 Siskin in the bankside Alders with several Goldfinch and a few Reed Bunting on the marsh.

Towards Bow Bridge at dusk I counted at least 500 (may have been closer to 1K) Corvids coming in to roost somewhere upriver.

Sunny, 16º, warm, light E.

A trip to Farmoor to see a Black Redstart that had turned up.
Lollingdon Hill still had 2 Wheatears and 50+ Meadow Pipits feeding near the sheep and a small flock of 20 Fieldfare, 2 Redwing and 8 Starlings feeding along the Hawthorns at the top.

18 Corn Bunting flew in and settled in the trees at the western end and 12 Stock Doves on an adjacent field.

Woke up this morning at 04:30 to hear a Blackbird and a Wren singing in the garden and at least 2 Tawny Owls vocal! A good hour before daylight, soon back to sleep though.

Black Redstart

Overcast, 14º, light to fresh SSW

A bit of a grey day weather wise, but the hill turned up another good species today.

1 Black Redstart on the hill, sticking mainly to the Hawthorn bushes and always around 100m distance from me. Also on the hill were 5 Wheatear, they moved off reasonably quickly west and were last seen moving along the western slope.

The Black Redstart is apparently a 1st for this year in Oxfordshire.

Approximately 18 Yellowhammer, 20+ Meadow Pipit, the odd Skylark and Linnet also present.

3 Red Admirals also seen.

Tawny Owls vocal in the Meadow this evening.
