Great White

Sunny at first then clouding up, 12°, light NW.

An early morning walk along the Bunk line today:

I had a Little Egret fly over but only seen briefly thru the tree tops. Approx. an hour later I saw another presumed Little Egret rise up over a hedgerow and head off north towards the Wallingford area. This one was in view a little longer and although fairly high and distant and flying away. I could either take some pics or look at it thru my binoculars. I chose the former and managed a few shots before it disappeared over the tree line. It wasn’t until I checked the pics on the computer, I realised it was a Great Egret. The second record for Cholsey.

The rest: c40 Canada Geese and 2 Egyptian Geese on a stubble field, nearby 2 Common Sandpiper and a Green Sandpiper, 1 Little Egret, 2+ Raven, 2 Jay, 3 Herring Gull, 7 Lesser Blackback Gull, 11 Yellow Wagtail, 1 Common Whitethroat, 6 Blackcap, 10+ Chiffchaff, 7 House Martin and 100+ Swallow.

Mammals: Brown Hare & Red Fox.

Butterflies: just the one Small White.

Whinchat & Redstart

A cloudy day, 18°, breezy SW.

Alan covered the Bunk line this morning whilst I went out to Lollingdon.

I had just got back at mid-afternoon when I received a message from Alan that he had just found a Whinchat and a Redstart along the Bunk line. So “Deja vu”, boots back on etc and made for the Bunk line.

Not only a Whinchat was found but 2 Redstart and 2 Common Whitethroat which rounded off an otherwise quiet day nicely. Also several Swallow over and 5 Raven up near Green lane.

Lollingdon this morning: 4 Yellow Wagtail, 1 Willow Warbler, 10+ Chiffchaff, several Swallow and a Jay and a Raven.

Willow Emerald

Another sunny day, 24°, light S.

Fortunately the Willow Emerald Damselfly population at Cholsey Meadows survived the drastic clear-out of the ponds by contractors over the winter.

Alan found a couple today. First for the year.

Alan managed the Bunk line today as well as the Marsh and Meadows. Chiffchaff, Common Whitethroat, Yellow Wagtail, Swallow and Lesser Blackback Gull.

I went out to Lollingdon but with little success: 3 Blackcap and 14 Chiffchaff and that was about it.

Although a Redstart was calling from somewhere in the school playing field area, presumably the one seen near the church the other day. Possibly a second one there?

Mammals: Brown Hare.

Dragonflies: all sites, Common Blue Damselfly, Blue-tailed Damselfly, Small Red-eyed Damselfly, 1 Emerald Damselfly, 2 Willow Emerald Damselfly, Emperor, Southern Hawker, Brown Hawker, Migrant Hawker, Common Darter and Ruddy Darter.

Butterflies: all site, Brimstone, Large White, Small White, Common Blue, Brown Argus, Red Admiral, Peacock, Speckled Wood, Gatekeeper and Meadow Brown.

A Sparrowhawk, Common Whitethroat in same area and several Swallow overhead.

Very quiet on the hill this morning with just a couple of Yellowhammer, a Blackcap and several Chiffchaff noted.

Nearby 200+ Gulls and Corvids in recently tilled field.
