Cholsey, 1st Jan 2011, cloudy, 6°
51 species to start the year.
Woken at 01:00 by a Tawny Owl calling from the trees in the garden.
I went out around 08:00 towards the Lees.

2 Mute Swans and a lone Wigeon fly over were 2 species I didn’t expect to see over the farmland but everything else was predictable.
Winter Thrush numbers are up, especially Redwing which outnumbered Fieldfare.
6 Roe Deer,
6 Roe Deer,
On returning home I had 2 Cormorant fly over the garden.
Then a walk along the Thames from the 4 Arches to Bow Bridge.
A small flock of Siskin at Cholsey Marsh again and a 5 Tufted Duck on the river.
C60 Canada Geese and a Greylag by the islands near the 4 Arches. Also a Little Grebe and a Great Crested Grebe nearby.
Not a lot else on the water other than a few rowing crews.
At around 13:30, just about to leave home when a skein of c50 Whitefronts flew over. They were flying east towards the Thames and maybe South Stoke (same flock)?
A good start to the year with 2 garden ticks. Cormorant and Whitefronts!
Happy new year everyone.
Tony Williams had a Brambling in his garden this morning.
