High dive Squirrel

Overcast, 14º, light rain, no wind.

04:30.........................I woke up early this morning to the song of a Wren in the garden just outside the window, got up, made a cup of tea and decided to sit by the living room window and listen to the limited dawn chorus around the garden.

The Rooks and Jackdaws were leaving the rookery and constantly calling and the Robin started up followed by Blackbird and Song Thrush, a Crow called as did a Moorhen. Shortly after a couple of Wood Pigeon started up and a Great Tit, Collared Dove, Blackcap, Chaffinch, a distant Pheasant heard, a Blue Tit, 3 Mallard appeared in the garden and a Tawny Owl called in the meadow and a Chiffchaff started singing.
By this time it was getting light and a few birds started to appear in the garden to feed.

A little later I heard what I thought was a branch break and caught sight of a Grey Squirrel drop from a tree and plunge into the birdbath, immediately shaking itself off it raced back up the tree only to get knocked off again by another squirrel and drop to the ground by the trunk of the tree. After I stopped laughing I saw that there was some kind of dispute going on and both the squirrels shot off along the trees to the other end of the garden and I lost sight of them. Pity is was not light enough to get a photo!

I would only give the Squirrel 2 out of 10 for the dive as it landed with a belly flop in the birdbath and was far from Olympic standard!
